Originally called Salinter, Tanjong Pagar in Malay means “cape of stakes”, a name that reflects its origins as a fishing village situated on a former promontory. Orang Laut and the Chinese were among the early inhabitants of Tanjong Pagar.
In the mid-19th century, the area became an enclave for thousands of Chinese and Indian dock workers who migrated to Singapore. Tanjong Pagar Road was one of the main thoroughfares for transportation of goods between docks and godowns along the Singapore River.
In the 1920s and 1930s, the area was inhabited by many pawnshops. This unit was originally occupied by Chop Wing Joo pawnbroker shop in the 1930s. It was subsequently occupied by Chop Wing Foh pawnbroker shop.
This shop was the first area in Singapore to be gazetted under the government’s conservation plan in the mid-1980s. Some unrestored shophouses were sold by tender to private developers by the government to provide an opportunity for the private sector to participate directly in the conservation effort. Tanjong Pagar Road was one of the 17 shophouses put up for tender by the government in 1991.
