With its strategic location at the intersection of two main roads, this unique corner shophouse enjoys rare double frontage along South Bridge Road and Upper Cross Street.
Built by George Coleman in 1833, South Bridge Road started at the south of Thomson Bridge (now Elgin Bridge), from which it took its name. As one of the thriving centres of the city in the heart of Chinatown, South Bridge Road was one of the main thoroughfares between the town and New Harbour (now renamed Keppel Harbour).
Most recently, South Bridge Road housed Weng Cheong Co Pte Ltd, the oldest goldsmith and jewelry shop in Singapore, which was established in 1919. With a history of almost 100 years, Weng Cheong is an established jeweler, known for its diamond, jade and gold jewellery. Its founder, Mr Peng Bai Wei, was also one of the four pioneers who initiated the establishment of the Singapore Jewellers Association.
In the past, Weng Cheong not only sold jewellery, but also provided remittance services for local businessmen. Many sent money to China for their family or for business purposes. At its peak in the 1950s after World War II, Weng Cheong’s remitted funds ranging from $500,000 to $1,000,000 per month, as relatives rushed to remit emergency funds to their families in China.
